#1  Low-fat dairy products

An important component to maintain healthy skin is Vitamin A, which low-fat dairy products have in abundance. Also, if you eat a lot of low-fat yogurt, the acidophilus (those little good-for-you-bacteria) will help to keep your digestive system regulated. Which, in turn, will help keep your skin healthy.

 

#2  Fruits with anti-oxidants

Some of the best fruits to eat that have anti-oxidants in abundance are:

  • blackberries
  • blueberries
  • raspberries
  • plums

Free radicals, which you can get when exposed to sunlight, are damaging to the membranes of skin cells. In turn, they may even damage the DNA of your skin cells. So eating fruits high in anti-oxidants will help to combat the effects of free radicals on your skin.

A few examples of foods that are high in essential fatty acids are:

The essential fatty acids you consume with meals are responsible for keeping your cell membranes healthy. They act as barriers for your skin cells — keeping out things that are not good for them, as well as allowing the good things into your skin cells.

Some examples of foods high selenium are those made from whole wheat grain, such as whole wheat bread, muffins and cereals.

Researchers say that selenium is very important to your skin, playing a key role in keeping your skin healthy. In clinical trials at Edinburgh University, scientists found that people with high counts of selenium in their bodies had skin that suffered less damage from free radicals from the sun, and thus were more protected from getting skin cancer.

 

#5  Oils that are good for you

When experts say oil that is good for you they mean oils that are made by cold-press or the expeller process. Or oils that are extra-virgin, as in the case of olive oil (EVOO). Such oils contain those essential fatty acids mentioned earlier, which help to keep your skin well lubricated. This is essential for healthy skin cells and a great looking skin.

In order for skin cells to remain plump and healthy, they need a certain amount of water. Keeping your skin cells properly hydrated with water enables your the cells to move those things that are good for the skin cell inside and remove those things such as waste products that are not.

One interesting fact that you may not know is that hard water is actually better for you (in terms of drinking water) than water that has had softeners added to it. The reason is because of all the minerals that hard water contains.
