For Healthier Hair, Dry Shampoos Work Better Than Baby Powder In Between Washings

There’s a new trend in washing your hair. That trend is not washing your hair at all!

That’s right, instead of washing your hair with shampoo and water, you can use dry shampoos instead.

I can tell you that using dry shampoos periodically is far better for your hair than using the shampoo and water method.

Here’s why…

Why Dry Shampoos Work

Actually, the idea of using a dry shampoo to wash your hair really isn’t anything new.

I can remember when I was a teenager being told by my mother that putting a little baby powder on my brush and then brushing my hair would take care of the oil on my hair and make it shinier.

The fact is commercial shampoos and conditioners — along with the routine of daily washing — can often ruin your hair. While your hair may get clean when you wash it this way, it can also become dry and brittleeven if you traditionally have oily hair.

On top of that, when you add conditioner (which is meant to replace your hair’s natural oils), you create a whole other problem.

Here’s the thing: when you wash your hair every day, you are stripping those natural oils from your hair. This, in turn, actually causes the body to overcompensate when it comes to producing natural oils. So is it any wonder that when you wash and condition your hair every day that the very next day it is greasy again?

It’s really not surprising when you think about it.

Reasons You Might Want To Try A Dry Shampoo

People who use dry shampoos do so for a variety of reasons.

They absorb oil, sweat, and odor and come in convenient sprays, powders, and mousses. You simply brush a dry shampoo through your dry hair to stretch the time in between washings.

Here are some of the most popular reasons that you may want to consider using dry shampoos on occasion:

  1. You want to get away from using commercial shampoos and conditioners — because you feel they have stripped the oils out of your hair and or ruined your hair.
  2. You are going camping (or participating in some other outdoor activity) and won’t have access to a water source, so you won’t be able to use regular shampoo.
  3. You woke up too late to wash your hair. (C’mon, we’ve all been there. How many times have you rubbed some baby powder in your hair at the roots when you didn’t have time for a full shampoo?)
  4. You simply don’t feel like washing your hair today. Simple as that.
  5. You’ve been in the hospital, or for some other health reason you cannot wash your hair temporarily.

So, are you convinced yet? I don’t know about you, but I am! But for me, using dry shampoos wasn’t really a stretch in the first place. I’ve been using baby powder in between hair washings for several years now. Dry shampoos are just that next step toward cleaner, fresher smelling, healthier hair.

I do find it very interesting how — in this age of chemical allergies and sensitivities — we are returning to so many of the natural techniques for cleaning ourselves and our homes these days. Personally, I think this is a good thing, and in the long run will be healthier for all of us.
